What to compare on the result
- The name matches the person who will work on you, not only the business owner.
- The license number matches the one on their website or booking page.
- The status reads current or active, and the expiration date has not passed.
- The profession is massage therapy. Physical and occupational therapists are licensed by other boards.
- Where the board publishes it, the discipline record.

License lookup: common questions
Is there one national database of massage therapist licenses?
We did not find one. Each state board runs its own search. The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards lists its member boards on a License Lookup page, and this page goes straight to each board’s own search instead.
Which states do not license massage therapists?
The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards lists no state regulation in Kansas, Minnesota and Wyoming. California has an optional certification run by the California Massage Therapy Council, which is not a government license, and Vermont lists registration rather than licensure.
What if I cannot find the person?
A license is filed under the holder’s legal name, which can differ from the name they practice under. Ask for the full name and the license number, then search by number when the board allows it.
Does a license in the lookup show lymphatic training?
No. A lookup confirms the state record. Lymphatic drainage training is a separate credential issued by schools and registries, listed on our lymphatic certifications page.
